As photographers, we’re always fixated on light. Danny and I joke about how we’ve become such light geeks. As we’re driving in our car, we’ll both comment, “Wow, look at the light coming through those trees! It would be amazing to photograph someone right there.”
And something we’ve noticed is how light looks so different in different parts of the country. Oftentimes, we can look at a photograph and, regardless of landscape, make a good guess about where it was shot. Pacific Northwest, New England, California, the Southeast — in every location, the sunlight takes on a different color cast and has a different quality. I’m not sure how to explain it exactly, but we can see it. Here are four portraits we’ve shot this year — all couples, all beautifully lit on sunny days. And in all of them, the light looks at least a little bit — and sometimes a lot — different.
New York:
Virginia:
Florida:
California:
(Note: Pretty much every photographer who lives outside of California is jealous of the photographers who live inside of California. The light is just dreamy!)
I love light, in all its varieties. I love the ways we can use light to create incredible photographs. And I love exploring light, just as I love exploring states and countries.
Can’t wait to do some more exploring!
