I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

What’s In Our Camera Bag Now — An Update; Or, Why I Love My 85 mm Lens to Pieces

Friday, December 20th, 2013

In the spring, I did my most recent version of “what camera gear we use” on the blog, but it’s time for an update. Because we got the Nikkor 85 mm f/ 1.4 back in June, and it has dramatically changed the way I shoot. As in, I use this lens every chance I get. Here’s why.

First, the compression you get on “longer” lenses is incredible. It takes the subject of your image and the image background and compresses them — as in, makes them look closer together, which creates a pleasing, rounded overall look to the image.Daytona Beach Wedding PhotographersSecond, 85 mm is the sweet spot when it comes to focal lengths for traditional portraits. It doesn’t stretch or compress the subject’s features. The 85 is just gorgeous when it comes to classic portraits.Florida Natural Light PhotographerThird, the dreamy, creamy backgrounds the 85 produces are incredible. See how perfectly it turns the lights from the Williamsburg Bridge and the Empire State Building into perfect little glowing orbs?Williamsburg Bridge Wedding PhotographyFifth, gorgeous things happen at receptions when you shoot wide open on a longer lens that compresses the room and use off camera flash to illuminate your subject(s).Central Florida wedding photojournalismI love the rich, soft look and sophisticated feel of the 85 mm lens — or, more accurately, the images I can produce with it. If you’re a photographer looking for an amazing portrait lens, this is the one I would recommend, and the one that I now use about 90% of the time during portrait sessions.
