I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

Something Bigger Than Ourselves | Florida Wedding Photographers

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

As I looked through our blog yesterday, my eyes settled on one simple photograph. And I had one simple thought: “That is a picture of love.”

Two weeks ago, we were caught up in the middle of United, and reminded hourly of something I’ve been pondering ever since. Our lives and our jobs, the speakers kept telling us, have to be bigger than ourselves. They have to be about more than making money or making a name for ourselves. They have to be about helping people, serving people, making life better for everyone we touch. Photography, by its very nature, does that. Often quite easily. But only if we, the photographers, get out of the way.

What I mean is this: I want to make beautiful photographs. I want to create striking, memorable photographs. When someone looks at one of my photographs of a couple, though, I want the first, second, and third thing that they see to be the love that is the heartbeat of every couple’s story.

Dreamy light and breathtaking backdrops are wonderful and invaluable to creating great, artistic photographs. But love has to come first.
