Sometimes you just need to head down roads you don’t know. Sometimes you need to just go exploring. And sometimes you need to just park your car and go for a walk in the woods. Or along a boardwalk criss-crossing a lake covered with alien life forms — otherwise known as lily pads.Yesterday afternoon, Danny and I set out with a vague destination in mind. Instead, we decided to take a right turn where our directions told us to go left, and then we left directions behind altogether. An hour later, we found ourselves at a remote park Danny had never been to in his eight years in Florida, and which I hadn’t visited for twenty years. It wasn’t where we’d intended to go. But out there in the golden afternoon, watching tiny fish splashing, a kingfisher diving, and listening to a distant, early owl talking through the trees, it felt like exactly where we needed to be.
