I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

My Favorite Things . . . Right Now: Daily Teatime and Ongoing Education

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

It’s 9:30 in the morning, so, naturally, I have a cup of tea in my hand. Yesterday it was a chocolate chai latte from Starbucks, and today’s it’s mug of Eastern Shore Tea Company‘s delicious Jack Frost blend. There’s not much better on a brisk, overcast morning. And no better way to motivate myself to work than by promising myself another sip after each task.

Today’s work includes watching a creativeLIVE workshop and reading a business book, in addition to the usual emails, blogging, and a photo shoot this afternoon. I hate to admit that Danny has me beat in the passion department when it comes to ongoing education in our business, but the truth is that we both think it’s essential to growing our photography business and effectively serving our clients, and so we’re incredibly grateful that photographers have such easy access to great resources that help us develop as artists and as business people. It would be easy to spend huge stretches of days at a time just soaking in all the knowledge that is available online, through workshops and tutorials and blogs and forums. And some days, I wish I could spend huge stretches of days at a time doing just that, because as we learn, we get more and more excited and energized to do our job, and do it better. It’s the perfect solution when we’re starting to feel worn out after a busy season that never has an official end.

Speaking of busy — today is day two of five days in a row of shoots, with a wedding capping it off this Sunday. It’s a little busy, but hey — we’re doing what we love. And here’s a peek from yesterday’s gorgeously overcast session with Jacy!Daytona senior portraits~ Laura
