LAURA YANG

I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

Three children, four grown children, two grown children’s spouses, two parents/grandparents, and one great-grandfather, plus two corgis. It sounds like a big, unruly group. But as I told the Hensons (a family that is oh-so-special to us: Amanda was my maid of honor) over and over, they were quite possibly the easiest-to-photograph family ever. Because […]

It never fails: During the latter half of fall and all of the Christmas season, I want crisp weather. Wool coats. Mulled cider. Cornflower skies. Cozy scarves. Pies, warm and fresh from the oven. Then January 2 rolls around, the holidays come screeching to a halt, and I’m ready to move on. To springtime. Sundresses. […]

They don’t take themselves too seriously, but they knew their relationship was serious right from the start. I grew up with Frank’s two sisters, so I’ve known him since his elementary school days, but it was Danny who knew about Kaci first. He vividly remembers the night several years ago when Frank nervously told the […]

We got home from New Orleans last night and settled in for a great night’s sleep in our own bed. And in just three hours, I’m leaving town again — this time to chaperon a weekend retreat in Ocala, with 200 middle school students and a head full of new ideas for my business that I learned […]

I’d been shooting my D700 for several months before I learned how to switch it from Manual mode to one of the presets. Should I feel sheepish over that? I’m feeling a little sheepish over that. But the only reason I didn’t know how to do it because 1.) D700s, unlike many DSLRs, don’t have the […]

They’re the kind of couple who don’t have to convince you they’re in love. The kind that whispers jokes in each other’s ears. The kind that speaks their own shared language, that walks side by side with their hands tucked in each other’s back pockets. The kind that makes me so glad I’m lucky enough […]
