LAURA YANG

I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

I walked the dog outside this morning and was greeted with the sound of horses whinnying and Canada geese calling as they flew overhead. It’s these little things, like those beautiful sounds and the crisp fall air and last night’s deliciousness, that make me appreciate each day anew. (A quick note: There was meat. Lots […]

Outside of their house, everyone thinks the Hughes girls are quiet. But I know better. I’ve been inside their house. Secretly, these two little dolls are firecrackers; they just save all the sparks for when no one but their parents and baby brother are watching. Lucky for us, they warmed right up to the cameras during […]

Any adults out there who think parties centered around kids can’t be much fun have clearly never seen a swarm of ‘tween ballerinas kick off their point shoes and stomp a dance floor senseless. Yes, that happened last Saturday at Clara’s Dream Ball, the 30th anniversary gala for the Civic Ballet of Volusia County, held […]

I’m in the middle of a string of on-location family photo shoots, with families that range in size from four to twenty-one people strong, so I’ve got family portraits on the brain. From figuring out new poses to brainstorming ways to keep the kiddos entertained, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking and rethinking […]

Flowers never fail to make me contemplate my own mortality. Roses arrive from the florist fresh and youthful, folded in on themselves tightly, almost like a baby curled into a fetal position, so tender and adorable and filled with the promise of what’s still to come. Gradually — or overnight, like a child who adds […]

I have vivid memories of days during my childhood when my family seemed to be rush-rush-rushing around, with barely a moment to catch our breath. My memories of those days are vivid because they were also rare; rather than being an always-scheduled child, after we finished (home)school each day, I had plenty of time to play, […]
