LAURA YANG

I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

It was a concept I had long understood, but never known, before Dr. Robbins explained it in Great Works of World Literature during my senior year. Translated literally from Japanese, it means “the pathos of things,” or, interpreted less succinctly but more clearly, the idea has come to mean that fleeting beauty is all the […]

Disclaimer: If you happen to read the blog written by the incredible Jasmine Star (whom I actually reference in this article) and think that I just ripped her blog post from this morning, I didn’t. I wrote this on Sunday. I’ll just say that I’m delighted to see that Jasmine and I are thinking somewhat […]

What they say about the grass being greener definitely applies to some of the (relatively) modern inventions that make our lives easier. Case in point. Anyone who knows me well will tell you I’m something of a girly girl. I might not wear many cute accessories or decorate my house in pink, but the one […]

Earlier this month, we were in Virginia for one of our several annual trips, and we missed fall. The season had technically begun, but we missed the fall everyone thinks about — colored leaves, crisp cornflower skies, cozy fireplaces crackling, the scent of pumpkin pie wafting from the kitchen. We missed fall in the Shenandoah […]

A confession, which is somewhat sad, and more than somewhat true: When I’ve got my camera, I constantly look for beauty — in a bride’s anxious smile, in a sweeping landscape. When I don’t have my camera, I often forget to actively look. But a sunset will always halt me in my tracks. So will […]

It seems like recently I’ve been fielding a lot of camera questions — from friends, from strangers, from people on Facebook. In some cases, I’ve felt completely up to answering the questions; in others, I haven’t felt qualified. But here’s what I know: As someone who hasn’t had a digital SLR camera slung over her […]
