LAURA YANG

I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

You might remember my wonderful friend Erin from the beach portraits I took of her with her best friend (and upcoming Maid of Honor) Hannah, last July. Erin told me after the fact that, during our photo session, Hannah kept whispering to her, “Adam’s going to love these pictures of you. Adam’s going to love […]

Spending the tail end of the holidays in Virginia meant that Danny and I (and George, of course) were in Virginia in each of the last five months of 2011. We were there September into October, when we shot Heather and Jesse’s fun-tastic love session. We were there again for Thanksgiving. And we wrapped up […]

According to Brittany, their first date came after she lost a bet and had to kiss him. According to Brandon, Brittany lost the bet intentionally. Whether or not Brandon’s suspicions are right, it worked out for both of them: They got engaged eight months later, and Danny and I had the pleasure of photographing their […]

New Year’s resolutions are something I’ve turned my nose up at for many, many years. Because I learned at a very early age that they’re a terrible idea, unless you’re looking for a new form of self-flagellation. Really, how many people stick to their shiny new five-days-a-week gym routines for more than about four days? […]

Oh, the trials we endured for this family portrait session! We drove 12 hours. We had to shoot it at 10:00 at night, because a busy and behind-schedule restaurant kept most of the family members out later than intended. To top it all off . . . Danny and I had to get in these […]
