LAURA YANG

I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

It’s a story I usually recite to each of our couples, because inevitably they ask, “So how did you get into wedding photography?” How did we get into wedding photography. . . . To summarize, it went something like this: Wanting to be a writer, I headed to college to study English and Creative Writing. […]

Have you ever browsed through a friend or relative’s wedding photographs and thought to yourself that it was a beautiful wedding, but the key players didn’t seem very emotionally involved? That they just smiled for the camera and went through the motions? I’ve thought that — and I’ve thought that about weddings that I know were […]

Danny kickstarted it, but now we’re both on an efficiency kick. Hardcore. A week ago, I made a week’s worth of meals on Sunday so I wouldn’t have to worry about cooking during that workweek. We’ve been dedicating energy to to streamlining our workflow so we spend the right amount of time on each job, instead of […]

She was so ready to go see her husband-to-be that she could hardly get into her gown fast enough. They saw each other in front of the grand old house, under wet gray skies and against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They held hands, and he asked her to twirl, and her cheeks […]

Yesterday, Yi and Michael got married at our church. He beamed proudly as she walked down the aisle on her father’s arm; she cried as they held hands, and he offered his shirt cuff for a handkerchief. Happily ever after is underway. Have a wonderful time in Savannah, you two! Congratulations!~ Laura + Danny

It’s Friday. There should be the Photographers’ Friday intro at the top of the page, leading into a blog post about photography tips or running a photography business. But there isn’t. This summer, Danny and I have had some serious conversations about our photography business, what we want it to become as it continues evolving, and […]
