LAURA YANG

I've
always been
storyteller.

But I never set out to be a photographer. I was (and still am!) going to be a writer. And then as I worked toward that writing goal, someone put a camera in my hand and asked me to try telling stories with something besides words. So with an English nerd's love for character and tone, a romantic's love for poignant beauty, and a realist's love for imperfection, I dove in.

I've
always been a
story-teller.

That was back in 2010.

Since that time, photography has changed much of my life. It's brought me some of my dearest friends. It's reshaped the way my husband Danny and I view serving others. It has even literally taken me around the world. One thing that hasn't changed: my soul-stirring desire to tell stories that feel so real you're sure you knew them before you heard them. Or saw them. It's my privilege to tell those stories for my clients, and for the generations of their families still to come.

Thanks to one Hurricane Matthew, we had to change what was supposed to be an afternoon beach session (on what turned out to be a very rainy, gray afternoon) to sunrise the following week (on what turned out to be an incredibly lovely morning). It started with a piece of paper from Rifle Paper Co. A beautiful floral print in hues of sweet peach and apricot and cream and sage and fir. (If you look for it, you’ll find it peeking out on the table.) Then came the birch wood, the heirloom sterling silver, the white pumpkins, the handmade burlap utensil […]

Bradley fell for Ivelisse not long after they met, and Ivelisse knew Bradley was the one she should marry when she saw the determination with which he pursued her. All that love absolutely bubbled over into a radiant engagement session, just a few months before they tie the knot down in Puerto Rico. If their wedding […]

I had never been to the Bulow Plantation Ruins before, but not for lack of trying (thanks, random park hours that keep this placed closed every Tuesday and Wednesday!). You can pick out the perfect outfits for them, and comb their hair just so. But even for family pictures, you can’t take the silly out of little boys! This Ormond Beach family portrait session, on a beautiful, not-quite-blustery fall evening, was all about playing tag and exploring the park . . . in between […]

It was about five months after she initially contacted me about doing portraits with her thoroughbreds that we finally made them happen, and, oh, fall was worth the wait! Having experienced it myself, I’m a big believer in the bond between a girl and her horse. Or horses. Or a woman and her horse. Or horses. […]
